Voice and real-time communications

Investigate call setup and media transport with SIP checks, bidirectional synthetic RTP measurements, and path evidence.

A call that connects successfully can still break up once people start speaking. Measure signaling and synthetic media transport separately, then compare their results with the paths and local conditions at each affected site.

Separate call setup from media delivery

SIP signaling
Configure SIP checks for OPTIONS, registration, or synthetic call setup and teardown. Verify the signaling operation you depend on independently of the media transport test.
Bidirectional media transport
Run synthetic RTP checks against an authenticated RouteSpear responder. Inspect loss, jitter, duplication, and reordering in both directions instead of relying on whether a call could connect.
Site and path context
Run path measurements from the affected locations and compare the same incident window. Add wireless observations or device-interface counters where the next question concerns the local link.

Reproduce the conditions around a bad call

  1. Choose the sites and responder

Place agents on the relevant networks and configure the authenticated responder for the synthetic transport test. Confirm that the chosen endpoints and test settings represent the path you intend to investigate.

  2. Check signaling and transport independently

Configure the SIP operation and RTP measurement, then verify successful samples. Review both directions; the return path can behave differently from the outbound path.

  3. Bring time-scoped evidence to the incident

Compare the degraded interval across signaling, synthetic media, and available path or local-link observations. Retain the endpoints and test settings when escalating the finding.

What the evidence can tell you

Synthetic media has a defined scope

RTP checks do not record speech or produce a MOS estimate. They measure transport between the configured endpoints; they do not inspect the media inside an actual user’s Teams, Zoom, or other conferencing session.

A separate probe is a separate flow

Path measurements and a synthetic RTP stream may take different routes or receive different treatment. Use them as distinct evidence, and do not label a probe path as the exact path taken by a user’s call.
